Jobs relief as Peacocks stores saved from axe in takeover

4:21pm Wednesday 22nd February 2012

MORE than 40 jobs across Tendring have been saved after a troubled clothing chain was bought out.

The Peacocks stores in Clacton, Frinton and Harwich will all remain open after the takeover by the Edinburgh Woollen Mill today.

Each of the Tendring stores employs 13-15 workers.

Edinburgh Woollen Mill is keeping almost 390 Peacocks stores open.

The deal will protect about 6,000 jobs.

But another 224 stores have been axed and stopped trading with immediate effect with the loss of 3,100 jobs.

Emma Bowles, 35, from Briardale Avenue, Dovercourt, said: "I am really pleased that the store is not closing. There are hardly any shops in the Harwich area as it is.

"I use Peacocks to by my own clothes and it is great for my two boys aged six and three. It is always good value for money."
