New benefits advice service for cancer patients
2:37pm Wednesday 22nd February 2012
CANCER patients across north east Essex will be given advice about welfare benefits thanks to a new service.
Patients, families and carers in the district will be able to get help to increase their income thanks to the scheme, which is being funded by Macmillan Cancer Support.
The charity has provided money for three dedicated welfare rights advisors for four years to cover Tendring and Colchester.
Patients or their families can be seen at Clacton Hospital or St Helena Hospice Day Centre, in Clacton, and at Essex County and Colchester General hospitals.
Tendring Council cabinet spokesman Stephen Mayzes said: “A diagnosis of cancer can raise all sorts of concerns, including how this can affect someone’s financial security.
“It may lead to worries about a job, paying the bills and claiming benefits and this dedicated service can help to alleviate some of those worries for patients and their families at what is already an extremely stressful time.”
The new service can help with issues such as entitlement to sick pay, benefit appeals, partners needing to take time off work and their entitlements, as well as arrears with rent or mortgage.
