Weeley park and ride could boost economy

2:20pm Wednesday 22nd February 2012

AN idea for a park and ride service in Weeley to boost visitor numbers to Frinton and Walton has been met with a positive response.

David Lines, a Frinton and Walton town councillor, says a park and ride scheme could help people bypass summer traffic chaos and get to Frinton and Walton more easily.

His idea includes building a large car park at Weeley train station and running regular trains to the towns.

Mr Lines says the economy is taking a hit because traffic congestion in the summer months limits the amount of people who can get into the towns and spend money.

He wrote a letter detailing his suggestion to Tracey Chapman, Essex county councillor responsible for highways.

He also asked for a feasibility study to be done.

Mrs Chapman replied saying the idea would be discussed with new train operators Abellio.

Mr Lines said: “I am encouraged by the response, which I thought was quite positive.

“It would not be an easy thing to implement, but I am glad the idea has not been dismissed out of hand.

“Congestion does affect our towns, and this could provide a boost for our economy.”

Mr Lines said he would keep in contact with the county council and looks forward to further developments.
