Burglar who had second thoughts snared by DNA

4:06pm Tuesday 21st February 2012

A MAN thought about stealing from a chemists after he stumbled on a break-in at the shop.

A court heard Sean Sheridan was walking past the Boots store in Brightlingsea when he saw a broken door.

He was in the process of climbing in when he had second thoughts and left the scene.

But Chelmsford Crown Court was told Sheridan, 42, left traces of skin and blood at the shop in Victoria Place after cutting his leg on the door.

Police arrested him after DNA checks provided a match.

Sheridan, of Campernell Close, Brightlingsea, admitted burglary when he appeared in court.

Sentencing was adjourned for reports until next month. He was granted bail.

The court heard boxes of diazapam had been stolen from the chemists after the break-in on August 15 last year.

But Sheridan was not responsible for that burglary as witnesses had seen a younger man running from the scene, the court heard.

Sheridan told police he had been drinking earlier in the evening.

He came across the burglary and initially decided to go inside.

He changed his mind but cut his leg as he left, the court heard.
