3:01pm Tuesday 7th February 2012

A MAN has been accused of raping a woman in a Clacton hotel bedroom.

A court heard Timothy Rukundo invited the woman and a friend back to his room at the Travelodge hotel for drinks.

They decided to stay overnight and were all in the same bed when the alleged rape took place in the early hours of March 17 last year.

Chelmsford Crown Court heard the woman, 24, woke to find Rukundo allegedly raping her.

The 26-year-old of Culvers Retreat, Carshalton, Surrey, denies rape.

Following his arrest he told police the sex had been with the woman's consent.

Matthew Gowen, prosecuting, said Rukundo and the woman had sex in the weeks before the alleged rape with the woman's consent.

The court heard the alleged victim and her friend left the hotel room. A member of staff saw she was crying and distressed, and the police were called.

•The trial continues.
