Essex: Live travel updates and warnings as inches of snow fall overnight

People are being advised to take care in the snow after about four inches of snow fell over the weekend and an amber warning for ice remains in place.

Some Essex farmers have been out in tractors helping the county council grit the roads.

A police spokesman said: "Those who have to drive this morning are advised to take extreme care.

"There are a few abandoned cars but the main routes are moving, albeit with only one track through the snow at the moment.

"Make sure your windscreen and windows are clear before you set off, have a shovel, warm clothing, flask with a hot drink and a fully charged mobile phone if you are embarking on a longer journey."

The ambulance service received more than 1,200 calls on Saturday night with paramedics called to three crashes in Essex.

The fire service are also warning to be careful in the wintery conditions.

Senior Divisional Officer Gary Fleming, Service Delivery, said: “The cold weather brings with it extra risks and the need for extra caution.

“As well as taking precautions with their heating, residents need to remember the dangers of leaving cooking unattended, as the majority of accidental domestic fires begin in the kitchen.

People should take extra care on the roads during icy weather and only travel if absolutely necessary.

“The best advice I can give is make sure that you fit, and regularly test, a smoke alarm. It is the single most important piece of safety equipment in any home.”

He also warned people about the dangers of walking on iced over ponds and lakes.
