Council staff learn old skills to create hedge

THE ancient art of hedgelaying is alive and well at Clacton’s Brook Country Park.

Almost 500ft of hedgerow along the boundary of the park and Little Clacton bypass has undergone a transformation and is now almost complete.

Staff from Tendring Council’s horticultural services team had special training before starting work on the project last year.

They have now returned to tackle the remaining section of hedge which was originally planted more than 15 years ago when the bypass was built.

Hedgelaying declined after the Second World War, but Trevor Mills, the council’s horticultural services manager, said his staff were keen to learn the skill and keep the art alive.

A further 100 trees are also to be planted in the coming weeks.
